Review: MARVELous The Show, Action Reaction Entertainment

Rating:

MARVELous The Show is not just another cabaret, burlesque or circus performance – it cleverly twists these genres into something fresh, innovative and absolutely hilarious. Whether you’re a die-hard Marvel fan or not, this show guarantees a fantastic night out.

MARVELous takes the audience through many iconic moments with hilarious and risqué interpretations of the well-loved Marvel Universe films. Whether it is the ‘Magic Mike’ inspired Tony Stark – ‘Pony Tony’ (Emma Wong) – or a gravity defying ‘Fat Thor’ (Thomas Remaili), the show consistently surprises with its creativity while showcasing an exceptional ensemble. For example, Samwise Holmes plays Deadpool, a character known for their signature irreverent humour, is a perfect fit as the show’s MC – funny and risqué, and this rendition absolutely lives up to expectations. Many moments by ‘Deadpool’ had the theatre filled with genuine laughter from the audience, enthusiastic cheers and playful heckling that added to the experience. This production aligns closest to the risqué humour and spirit of the Deadpool from the films.

The storytelling and performance quality of the cast elevates MARVELous from other similar shows. Importantly, the ensemble cast is immensely talented. Each performer plays multiple roles, showcasing their breadth of training and remarkable skill. Unlike many shows of a similar genre such as circus or cabarets, where specialists are easily distinguishable in group acts, every cast member in MARVELous is a well-rounded performer. The cast was strong and syncopated in group pieces, but also shone in their specialist skills like aerials and vocals. The live vocals were powerful and captivating, however some of the parody lyrics were difficult to follow. The aerials were not as precise or well executed as they could be, but still very impressive.

Also adding to the experience is Dan Potra’s outstanding production design. It is coupled with clever choreography (Emma Wong) and dynamic staging. These elements enhance visual impact while also highlighting the already outstanding performances from the cast. It is evident that immense care and thought that has been put into every aspect of this show.

What makes MARVELous special, is its accessibility. Cabaret, burlesque and circus can often feel niche and may not be particularly enticing to a wide audience. MARVELous effortlessly breaks through that barrier, making the genre inviting and universally entertaining. With its curated blend of comedy, skill and theatrics, the show reimagines the superhero spectacle in a dynamic and thoroughly enjoyable experience. Despite the strong execution in the acts, some Marvel references may leave those who are less familiar with the franchise momentarily confused and there were also a few lulls at times, where the audience was unsure how to react. However, the show is generally well paced and the confusion is quickly remedied through the strong acts.

While those pacing lulls slow the momentum at times, the sheer talent and charisma of the cast keeps the energy high and the audience engaged. MARVELous is a wildly funny and innovative show, that everyone (over the age of 18) can enjoy
