Gravity & Other Myths invites the audience to step into their world of captivating tricks infused with a unique sense of humour. A Simple Space by Gravity & Other Myths is acrobatics at its most intimate, raw and honest.
The audience surrounds and looks down on the small stage from three sides, creating an intimate experience where spectators become part of the action. A lone musician is poised at the back of the stage. Lamps on each corner provide the only lighting, creating effective and dramatic contrast for the performers. The small space, minimalist lighting, and earthy costumes strongly reflect the show’s name. Yet, there’s nothing “simple” about the performers’ dynamic and athletic movements. Their prowess is on full display as they effortlessly hold extended handstands and rapidly propel into back tucks. What truly stands out, however, is their undeniable charisma. The acrobats captivate the audience with their contagious joy and energy, leaving even the most apprehensive viewer with a smile.
The show boasts a distinct comedic flair, with numerous playful interactions between the performers and audience. These moments punctuate the displays of physical prowess, creating a well-rounded performance that never has a dull moment. The energy remains consistent throughout, with no lulls in pacing from start to finish. It’s a beautifully balanced act – both literally, with the acrobats’ impressive feats, and figuratively, striking a perfect chord between lighthearted fun and the tension of audience anticipation.
A notable feature of the show was the live musician and the use of body percussion and effective vocalizations—or silences—that enhanced the performance’s rhythm. The cast also doubled as a lighting team, adjusting the lights to complement different sections of their act. However, a minor drawback was that the lights were occasionally directed into the audience’s eyes, which hindered full enjoyment of the performance.
The performers’ tricks aren’t perfectly synchronized, but this isn’t a flaw. It feels deliberate, creating an atmosphere of authenticity—as if a group of friends had gathered to test their limits. This sense of genuine joy is amplified by moments where acrobats engage in captivating challenges, like skipping rope or executing backflips.
Overall, A Simple Space delivered an incredibly fun and refreshing experience. While the performers’ strength and athleticism were impressive, their ability to entertain and connect with the audience truly set them apart. This show offers the perfect escape from everyday stresses, allowing the audience to marvel at inspiring physical feats and leave with big smiles on their faces.
