Donita Cruz is a playwright and actor based in Sydney. She co-runs two companies, Sapatos Angels Collective and Five Elements Project, both committed to exploring the highs and lows of the Asian diaspora experience amidst Western culture. After growing up in Metro Manila then in Singapore, Donita relocated to Perth with her family in 2019. A graduate of WAAPA’s Bachelor of Performance Making (2022), she has since continued to hone her writing through Playlab Theatre’s Incubator 2023, ATYP’s National Studio 2024 and currently ATYP’s Cultivate Foundations. Donita premiered the full-length work of her debut play, IMELDA, at The Blue Room Theatre in 2024. With it, she cemented her ability to make work that is honest, heartfelt, and (un)surprisingly hilarious. IMELDA received multiple nominations from the Performing Arts WA Awards, including Outstanding New Work and Best Independent Production. Upon revising and rewriting the play, Donita is ecstatic to have this new and improved, final version of “IMELDA” premiering in Sydney at KXT on Broadway.
